Outdoor escape room

Blanes

Blanes, where the Costa Brava begins: a fishing port, a cliff garden, a rock in the sea.

Blanes is the first town of the Costa Brava, and Via Enigma is turning it into an outdoor escape room: the first adventure, The Doors of Blanes, is open now, alongside the City Photo Passport, twenty-six places to collect on your phone, from the Tordera river mouth to Cala Treumal. The town still lives like a fishing port: a fleet that auctions its catch on weekday afternoons, a market on the Passeig de Dintre from Monday to Saturday morning, a medieval gate and the Sa Palomera rock where the wild coast begins. Above the port the Marimurtra garden hangs over the sea and the Sant Joan castle looks down on the bay. Your group starts in the church square at the top of the old town and follows its doors down to the sea.

Why play in Blanes

  • Flat and easy

The port, the old core and the seafront promenade are level ground, close together and good for families and pushchairs.

  • A real fishing town

The fish auction and the Es Portal counters are working places, not a set: the fleet lands its catch on weekday afternoons.

  • Two hills with a view

The Sant Joan castle above the port, with free grounds and a tower you can climb in summer, and the Marimurtra garden hanging over the sea.

  • Big nights

The Costa Brava International Fireworks Contest fires from the Sa Palomera rock in the last week of July, one show a night.

Adventures in Blanes

  • The Doors of Blanes

Walk Blanes from its oldest door, the lords' palace, to its newest, the steel door where the Costa Brava begins. Hunt a goat hidden in a Gothic fountain, choose the pirates' stairs or the last town gate, find the fishermen's gift, and on the rock learn the year the lords made Blanes theirs, and why.

Practical information

Getting there
Blanes has a station on the R1 Rodalies line from Barcelona, with a bus link between the station and the centre, and buses run along the coast from Lloret de Mar and the neighbouring towns; check the timetable before you travel. By road, follow the signs to the port and the seafront.
Parking
Use the car parks by the seafront and the bus station and check the signs; the old core is best done on foot and the market fills the Passeig de Dintre on Monday to Saturday mornings.
Where the adventures start
The Doors of Blanes starts in the church square (Plaça de l'Església) at the top of the old town, in front of the round-arched stone door beside the church of Santa Maria; the approaches to the square may have a few steps. The app shows the spot on a map with walking directions before you press Start. The City Photo Passport is open and it starts wherever you are: the Sa Palomera rock is the natural first stamp.
Best time of day
Mornings for the market and the fish counters, Monday to Saturday until 14:00; weekday afternoons for the auction at the port; evenings for the promenade and the port lights.
Kids and accessibility
The seafront, the market and the port are flat and pushchair-friendly. The castle path and the Santa Bàrbara path are steep and can be slippery after rain, so save them for older kids and good shoes.
Rain
An adventure with no time slots starts whenever you like, so you pick the weather. Rain during a game is part of the game: finish it if you can, or write to support. The market arcades, Es Portal and the port offer shelter nearby.
What to bring
A charged phone per player, water for the castle climb and sun cover in summer; a phone torch for the path if you go up to the castle after dark, and the garden ticket if you want the Marimurtra stamps.

Questions about playing in Blanes

Is it an escape room?

Yes: an escape room with Blanes as the room, played on your own phones through the real streets, with no locked door. The first adventure, The Doors of Blanes, is open now: the puzzles are the real doors, years and stones of the old town, read from the church square down to the sea. Alongside it you have the City Photo Passport: twenty-six places to collect on your phone, 7 EUR.

Do we need to book?

Only adventures that show time slots need booking; the others start whenever you like, day or evening. The passport never needs a booking.

What if it rains?

Rain during a game is part of the game and you can finish it. With no booking, simply wait for a better moment to press Start. If the rain caught you mid-game, tell support where you were and we will see what can be done.

Is it for children?

Yes. The seafront, the market and the port are flat and close together, so the passport works well with young children; save the castle climb for older kids. The Doors of Blanes is designed for players from age 12.

How long does The Doors of Blanes take?

About 1 h 15 at a walking pace, over 2.4 km: from the church square at the top of the old town, gently down through the lanes and along the seafront. It has no time slots, so there is nothing to book: your group of up to five starts whenever you like.

How it works

  1. Buy or pick Choose an adventure in the catalogue or a City Photo Passport. Most adventures start whenever you like; the ones with time slots are booked in two taps.
  2. Meet at the start point The app shows the meeting point on a map with walking directions. Gather your group there, each with a charged phone, and press Start.
  3. Play on your phones Walk, look, count and answer. Every puzzle sits in the real place; hints are there if you get stuck and the group moves at its own pace.
  4. Finish and collect Reach the finale, take the group photo and collect your XP. Stamps go into your passport, points into the rankings, and the next town is waiting.
